The theme I’ve chosen for this year’s conference is Champions Adapt. But, what’s in the theme? For me, I picked this up from my tennis coach during a lesson several years ago. We were going over my last league match – the score, things I did well, things I need to improve upon – and I remember commenting on what a windy day it was, but that I kind of embraced it and actually had fun with it versus my opponent. The wind was my friend that day. I made it my partner in the match. Coach Andy’s response was, “Atta girl, Jen! Champions adapt!” That’s how I ended up taking the match that day and prevailing over my opponent, regardless of the miserably windy conditions, which we were both subject to that day.
After that lesson, I just never shook those two words. I’ve really adopted them as my personal mantra, and if you’ve been around me long enough, you’ve probably heard me say them.
In the planning of this year’s conference, it just fit: Champions adapt. You don’t have to be playing a sport to have a goal that needs to be met, regardless of the obstacles in the way. You have to adapt.
We all know that serving in public office is not for sissies, and there are a million different things that get thrown at us on any given day. We constantly have to evolve and adapt, whether it involves the legislature, the weather, a tragic event, or an unforeseen blessing. We are constantly adapting to our conditions to achieve the best outcome on behalf of the citizens we serve.
In reflecting on the theme, I want to provide our officials with an incredible and inspiring keynote speaker who will set the tone for our gathering and challenge us to think on how this plays out in our lives, both personally and professionally. I’m really excited to announce that College Football Hall of Fame and Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame member, five time Pro-Bowler, and three time Super Bowl Champion JAY NOVACEK will be the keynote speaker at our 102nd Annual County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas Conference! I cannot wait to hear his message and share the experience with you all, my friends from across the state!
See you in San Marcos in October!
