Currently home to 41,280 residents, Wharton County was established in 1846 and named after Texas brothers William H. and John A. Wharton. Wharton County’s largest incorporated communities are El Campo (11,602 pop.), located west of the Colorado River, and Wharton (8,832) and East Bernard (2,272), which are positioned to the river’s east.
Agriculture and oil-related industry make up the backbone of our economy. Wharton County continues to remain among the leaders in Texas rice, cotton, corn and cattle producers.
