Texas Conference of Urban Counties

Texas Conference of Urban Counties

The Texas Conference of Urban Counties (Urban Counties) is a non-profit organization composed of 37 member counties representing nearly 80 percent of the population of Texas.

The Urban Counties supports and coordinates communications among member counties, studies policies and programs of the State of Texas that affect urban counties, advocates county issues, primarily at the state level, and provides training and education programs appropriate for urban county officials. All services and activities are pursued to make Texas county government more effective, more efficient, and more accountable to the people of Texas.

Urban County Programs Include:

Intergovernmental Relations: The Urban Counties’ major program and priority is advocacy on county issues before state government, such as unfunded mandates, greater authority and flexibility for counties, and special projects including the coordination of the Texas Clean Air Working Group. The urban counties have successfully obtained significant new authority and resources for Texas counties in recent years.

Member Services: Provision of a limited number of services to member counties:

·         TechShare – Collaborative IT projects saving money and providing better IT solutions than members can get on their own.

·         Public Power Pool – The largest energy-purchasing co-op in Texas.

·         Urban County Clips – Daily distribution of news articles on county government and county issues by e-mail.

Education: Production of a limited number of education programs specially tailored for urban county officials, including our Biennial Policy Conference and monthly luncheon series during legislative sessions.

The Urban Counties offices are located at: 500 West 13th St., Austin, 78701. For more information, contact Executive Director Donald Lee at 512-476-6174, or visit the Urban Counties Web site at www.cuc.org.
