Blue Mountain, the highest point of the Llano Estacado, and hills of white sand hundreds of miles from the ocean are natural features located here. Winkler County borders New Mexico and is approximately the halfway point between Fort Worth and El Paso.
The presence of Native Americans can still be found in the camps and cave drawings they left behind and their arrowheads and spearheads that are unearthed by the spring winds. Following the “boom town” years, cattle and oil are the wealth of Winkler County today, and most of the county’s population of 7,000 resides in the towns of Kermit and Wink.
