Hutchinson County is situated in the upper center of the Texas Panhandle. A drive through our county will enable you to view a diverse ecosystem composed of prairie, river breaks and farmland. Head into Borger, our largest city, and you can take a stroll in Huber Park and visit our bird sanctuary. Then drive down Main Street and check out the Hutchinson County Museum where you will find displays of our pioneer heritage and learn about the oil boom, which put our county on the map as a top supplier of petroleum products. Dine at one of our several restaurants for some of the best barbecue, Mexican food, steak or burgers in the area.
Head west on Highway 136 toward Fritch and you will find Lake Meredith, where you can fish, boat and water ski, or visit the Aquatic and Wildlife Museum. Highway 152 north from Borger will take you across the Canadian River. These picturesque river breaks are home to deer, rabbits, coyotes, bobcats, and many species of birds. Much of this landscape remains relatively unchanged from the days when the Indians roamed these parts. The land dips and rises slightly as you go toward Stinnett, our county seat. Come tour our courthouse, erected in 1928. Here you can see detail of the stone, marble and plasterwork of a bygone era. Just across 5th Street is the McCormick House, former home to one of our pioneer families.
To the north and east of Stinnett is the site of the Battle of Adobe Walls, a place of major historical significance where in 1874 Billy Dixon fired his amazing shot from a mile away.
