The Briscoe County Courthouse was completed in 1922 in a Classical Revival style. The brick and concrete structure was then remodeled in 1954.
Organized in 1892, the county was named for Andrew Briscoe, a Texas patriot and veteran of San Jacinto.
In their book, “The Courthouses of Texas,” Mavis P. Kelsey Sr. and Donald Dyal offer the following history on the christening of the county seat:
Silverton came by its name innocently enough: Mrs. T.J. Braidfoot, a local land developer, optimistically named the community Silverton. Other stories speak of a silvery sheen on one of the local lakes which inspired Mrs. Braidfoot. Perhaps both are true.
