Getting to Know…Jefferson County Commissioner Everette “Bo” Alfred

September 1, 2013 by Christi Stark

Newly Elected Second Vice President, North & East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association

09-13_Everette_Bo_AlfredJefferson County Commissioner Bo Alfred was born Oct. 2, 1957, in Beaumont, and he is married to the former Naomi Cormier.  They have four children: Ebony, Margaret, Joshua and Tyrone N. Alfred.  Alfred attended Beaumont Charlton-Pollard High School and graduated in 1976.  He attended undergraduate school at Lamar University in Beaumont, where he received bachelor’s degrees in industrial engineering in 1980, and criminal justice in 1989.

Alfred attended William P. Hobby School of Public Service at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where he graduated from the Certified Public Management Program in 1997.

Prior to his election as County Commissioner, Alfred served as director of Criminal Justice and Emergency 9-1-1 Services for the Deep East Texas Council of Governments from 1988 to 2001; was appointed to the Rural Crime Task Force, where he participated in implementing the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994; was elected president of the Texas Association of Criminal Justice Planners for the State of Texas;  and was elected to the Port of Beaumont Navigation District of Jefferson County.

On April 9, 2002, Alfred was elected Jefferson County Commissioner.

As a member of the Jefferson County Commissioners Court, Alfred has hosted the Jefferson County Precinct 4 Annual Health Fair in conjunction with the Tom Joyner Foundation’s national “Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day” campaign.  The initiative seeks to improve the health of all Americans, especially minorities who are affected by diseases at higher rates.

He also introduced the “Southeast Texas Super Seniors” Program (STSS) in 2009 as a free travel and educational program designed to keep seniors active and assist them in maintaining health throughout their golden years.  The program, funded by corporate and community sponsors, offered three bus trips to Texas sites for seniors ages 55 and older while providing drive-time educational presentations.

Other projects include the Jefferson County Precinct 4 “Read and Feed” Program, and the Pedometer Walking Program: “Health Truth.”

In addition, Alfred is involved in a variety of community service organizations and serves on multiple committees, commissions and boards.

“I count it an extreme honor and privilege to be elected as second vice president of the North & East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association,” Alfred offered. “I sincerely appreciate the confidence placed in me by the officers and the membership.  I look forward to working with them with a ‘can-do’ attitude to meet the challenging issues and concerns which face our community within the region.

“I think it is extremely important that we listen to our membership in order to facilitate the appropriate training in all jurisdictions throughout our region,” he continued. “I count it an honor and privilege to be a part of this outstanding team.” H
