TDA Honors Historic Farms, Ranches

January 1, 2014 by Christi Stark

In a celebration of agriculture and family heritage, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples honored 115 farms and ranches spanning 66 Texas counties at the 38th Annual Family Land Heritage (FLH) ceremony in early November. The ceremony, conducted in the House Chamber at the Texas State Capitol, recognizes Texas families who have kept their farms and ranches in continuous agricultural production for 100 years or more.

“Life in agriculture is never easy or simple, yet it’s truly a rewarding way of life,” Staples said. “We face droughts, fires, floods and pests, but here in Texas, we persevere. Today, the land these families have nurtured has turned the Texas agriculture industry into a powerhouse of productivity that generates $100 billion in economic impact for our state. That’s an accomplishment that would not be possible without the hard work of our farming and ranching families. I congratulate our honorees for preserving their ancestors’ dream and making Texas a leader in agriculture.”

Among the families honored were 11 whose properties have been in continuous agricultural production for
150 years or more, including:

  • 7IL Ranch in Austin County
  • Long Branch Farms in Bexar County
  • Howell Ranch in Cooke County
  • Rancho Gonzalez in Duval County
  • The Homeplace in Montgomery County (three separate parcels)
  • McKinney – Warren Place in Palo Pinto County
  • Metcalfe Ranch in Palo Pinto County
  • Poverty Point Ranch in Red River County
  • Whitener Ranch in Washington County

To date, TDA has recognized more than 4,800 properties in 239 counties across Texas.
