‘We All Make a Difference’
It is an honor and privilege to serve as president of the Tax Assessor-Collectors Association of Texas (TACA).
The office of the Tax Assessor-Collector is the most frequently visited office in the county with a wide array of responsibility and accountability. It is also the most rewarding position in county government because of interaction with our constituents.
As we bring this difficult year to an end, I think it is important to reflect on the great things tax assessor-collectors were able to accomplish. We are a resilient group of 254 diverse individuals that stood strong against all the challenges 2020 brought.
We were forced to change the way we conduct business in our offices and adapt to a new way of thinking. Sneeze guards, face masks, and social distancing became the “new normal,” while virtual sessions and Zoom replaced conferences and board meetings.
While COVID was running rampant and we tried to remain focused on keeping our offices open and our staff safe, we were also tasked with implementing the overwhelming changes to the property tax as a result of Senate Bill 2.
Many tax assessor-collectors faced even more challenges as the elections brought record-breaking voter turnout.
Looking forward to 2021, the 87th Legislative Session is on the horizon. Although we don’t know what the session will bring or how it will look at our Capitol, we understand the importance of working together and with our legislators to accomplish the goals for a better Texas.
I commend our tax assessor-collectors throughout the state for their perseverance and commitment to serve their constituents. TACA is a family! We support and promote the idea that all county tax assessor-collectors have the opportunity to act together in order to solve mutual problems as a unified group. It doesn’t matter the size of your county; from Loving to Harris and everyone in-between, we all make a difference!
