The mid-afternoon sun was shining, and the Whitlock brothers were herding cattle. David roped a cow, and his younger brother Gary dismounted and tried to “make the cow travel.” Gary’s efforts proved futile, so he remounted his young, green, broken colt. As soon as he hit the saddle, the horse bucked Gary off and he fell to the ground landing directly on his head.
Both David and Gary just knew that Gary had broken his neck, and both brothers assumed the very worst.
“Of course, back then we all thought that if your neck was broken, you died,” David said.
Gary tearfully looked up from the ground and told a crying David, “This is it.” To this day, David can still recall the agony in his brother’s voice. A few moments passed, and Gary gingerly tested his body. While his neck was not broken, his shoulder was dislocated. David picked up his brother and popped his shoulder back into place. Thankfully, Gary was okay
