Commissioners Court Advanced Curriculum

May 24, 2024 by Julie Anderson

By Jen Crownover
Comal County Commissioner
CJCAT President

Now that we’re kicking off the different Regional and State Conferences, have you stopped to check your transcripts and compare them with the curriculums offered? How many credits are you away from the bragging rights of the Commissioners Court Advanced Curriculum Certification?

Pursuing that certification is a great way to ensure a diverse learning experience over a greater assortment of topics. It’s a great way to push yourself. It’s a great way to show your dedication to your constituents, that you are learning everything you can by obtaining that certification to better serve.

You never know when you might stumble on a seemingly mundane topic that leads to some great class conversation and real-world examples that pique your interest, and maybe even make you think of an issue back home. Then, that conversation follows up over a snack in the Exhibit Hall with buddies from other counties and how that really was an important issue that made a big difference somehow.

That’s definitely the beauty of the conferences, isn’t it? Learning new things, comparing notes with our peers across the state, seeing things through various perspectives and applications, and then bringing it home! The relentless search for better ways, right? (Thanks, Jim Bearden!)

If you can grab that advanced certification while you’re at it, why not? There are many of us who have achieved it, and we are proud of that milestone.

The Education Committee and the Regional and State Associations are always working to make that program better. If there are issues that you don’t think are covered in the curriculum, let us know! We are always looking for ways to make the sessions better so you can get more out of them. If there is a place where you think we could do more, we will certainly work on it.

As Commissioners and Judges, being stagnant is not our style, right? Since our constituents expect us to be the equivalent of a “genie in a bottle” anyway, the more you know, the better you can serve, right?
