The Brazoria County Courthouse is comprised of the county’s 1940 capitol and an annex completed in 1976 fused into one building of brick and stone. The 1940 structure was designed in a Moderne style by Wyatt Hedrick. Organized in 1836, Brazoria County initially claimed the city of Brazoria as its seat. Comanche County’s original temple of justice was a split-log structure with one room, housed in the original seat of Troy. Once postal officials realized there already was a Troy, Texas, the name was changed to Cora. Built in 1991, the El Paso county capitol is a shining high-rise with flat surfaces covered by reflective glass. The previous courthouse, a Modern steel and concrete building erected in 1980, is still standing.
