The Texas Historical Commission Courthouse Preservation Program has demonstrated the ability of the state and counties to jointly pursue a worthy program. Forty projects have been completed, 31 are in progress, but 71 are awaiting state funding.
Renovation of our courthouses preserves our historical structures and provides a visible link to the efforts of our past leaders. These projects boost community spirit and tourism.
Courthouse renovation also provides local economic development. These programs have generated more than 8,000 jobs, $140 million in income, over $190 million in gross state products, and more than $350 million in total economic activity. Property values and commercial activity in our county seats have also benefited from these projects.
However, the Courthouse Preservation Program is subject to biennial legislative appropriation. Facing an expected $18 billion deficit, the Legislature will be tempted to curtail or eliminate this program. Please remind your legislators that the appropriation to the Texas Historical Commission for the Courthouse Preservation Program will provide economic and historical benefits today and in the future.
