Every so often, County Progress asks our distinguished Judges and Commissioners to allow us a glimpse into their public lives, giving us a fresh appreciation for the myriad of roles and responsibilities they shoulder every day. Our thanks to Rains County Commissioner Lori Northcutt for taking the time to visit with us.
HISTORY:
My name is Lori Northcutt. I have always enjoyed socializing, particularly as a group member throughout my school years. Whether it was cheering, playing sports, or participating in various clubs, I found great fulfillment in these activities. Additionally, I consistently sought opportunities to assist others, whether through home chores, waitressing at local cafes, or baby-sitting.
After graduating from a small school with only 10 classmates, I relocated to Waco and commenced my career as a title clerk at a large dealership. I have consistently admired women in professional roles.
In 1983, I met the man I would eventually marry. By October 1985, we exchanged vows and have since raised three successful children. During their school years, I actively participated in various school activities, including serving as commissioner of Little Dribblers, initiating the Parent-Teacher Organization program, and launching the pee-wee football and cheer programs at our local school. Simultaneously, my husband has maintained his position as a house mover, while I managed his office and oversaw our household responsibilities.
As my children matured, I embarked on my career in the spa business. Today, my daughter and I co-own a salon and spa, a business that I have proudly grown over the past 24 years.
IS IT WHAT YOU EXPECTED?
Entering the realm of public office was not a consideration until one day when our Republican Chair extended an invitation to lunch and inquired about my candidacy for the Republican ticket for Commissioner. Initially, I was uncertain about the specific responsibilities associated with the position. However, I am an advocate for challenges, particularly as a woman residing in a rural area. Despite initial apprehension, I decided to seize this opportunity. Within a short period, I engaged in a debate with my opponent during the March primary. Subsequently, I garnered the confidence of the voters and was appointed to the position in April 2022 due to the incumbent’s resignation for medical reasons.
In retrospect, I recall the palpable anxiety that gripped me prior to my inauguration. I had anticipated several months of meticulous preparation, but fate had other plans. To all newly elected officials embarking on this extraordinary journey, I extend my heartfelt appreciation for the unique experience that awaits you.
My insatiable curiosity drove me to incessantly seek knowledge, eager to acquire as much as I could within the shortest time frame possible. Experience, undoubtedly, serves as the most effective educator. The County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas conferences have been a resounding source of invaluable knowledge, imparted by esteemed speakers and fellow officials. The insights gained from these encounters have been overwhelming, yet profoundly positive.
Occasionally, the camaraderie with other Commissioners and Judges has evoked a sense of celebrity. I extend a sincere gratitude to our esteemed Judge and the Commissioners who have steadfastly supported me throughout this transformative journey.
TYPICAL DAY:
A typical day for a Commissioner commences early, often marked by an email or phone call addressing county concerns. My laptop and mobile phone remain indispensable tools for promptly responding to taxpayers and employees. My schedule is meticulously balanced, encompassing historic courthouse maintenance, the implementation of countywide initiatives, and the refinement of county policies. Operating under a unit road system, I seamlessly integrate my Commissioner responsibilities with my weekly salon business.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE:
One of my most significant challenges has been the commencement of a comprehensive health program for our employees over two years ago, particularly amidst limited financial constraints. The Texas Association of Counties provided invaluable guidance, facilitating the initial steps in this endeavor. We organized an even more substantial event for our employees for this fall.
The transparency afforded by town hall meetings is a cherished aspect of my role. This year, we convened three town halls to discuss solar farms, an inherently intricate issue. I firmly believe that these meetings alleviated taxpayers’ apprehensions.
FAVORITE PART OF BEING A COUNTY COMMISSIONER:
What truly enriches my experience as a Commissioner is the opportunity to contribute positively to the lives of others and propel the county forward. I derive immense pleasure from meeting new individuals. Being a Commissioner holds paramount significance, as our work plays a pivotal role in shaping the daily lives of our constituents. I aspire to maintain a commitment to active listening, fairness, and the fortitude to overcome the challenges inherent in this elected position.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share the daily experiences of a County Commissioner with you.
