Bandera County Commissioner Greg Grothues died January 22, 2026, at the age of 57.
Greg lived a life rooted in service, faith, family, and land. He proudly served as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, and County Commissioner of Precinct 2 in Bandera County, always putting his community first. For five years, Greg fought a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, meeting every challenge with strength, grace, and the biggest smile so many will always remember.
Greg was known for his fun, silly spirit and his genuine kindness. He always had the biggest smile and treated everyone he met with warmth and respect. He was always willing to help, no matter who you were or what you needed.
Lake Medina RV Resort is deeply tied to Greg’s family history. The land traces back to the Leibold Ranch, established in 1882. The ranch later became the Leibold Fish Camp, which operated from the 1920s through the 1980s under Greg’s great-grandfather, Anton Leibold, and grandfather, Milton Leibold. Milton’s daughter, Marlene Leibold, married Phil Grothues, and together they raised their family – Greg, Debbie, Laura, Carol, and Brian Grothues – first in Uvalde, and later in Kerrville.
In 2000, Phil Grothues and Greg Grothues built upon that history, developing the original fish camp into Lake Medina RV Resort as it is known today, creating a place rooted in family, tradition, and community.
Greg later married Gina Grothues, whom he met in Uvalde at just 12 years old, and together they raised their two children, Kristen and Cole Grothues, on the ranch. As a family, they worked side by side running Lake Medina RV Resort, caring for the land, working cattle, and continuing a legacy built on family, hard work, and a deep love for this community.
Above all, Greg was a devoted husband, father, and steward of the land. Greg’s legacy will continue to live on here, through this land, the Lake Medina RV Resort, and the many lives he touched. – Shared by the Grothues Family
