Why Stop In Austin County

November 30, 2007 by Sarah L

On behalf of Austin County citizens, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our home. Several choices await you for antique and gift shopping, recreation and sports entertainment, historical tourism, scenic drives, and of course mouth-watering meals and desserts reflecting the ethnic backgrounds of our citizens.
As the home of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred,” Texas history comes alive in many parts of Austin County, especially in the San Felipe community where the Stephen F. Austin State Park is located.
Bellville hosts a market every first Saturday, and you may wish to tour the historical jail museum. Austin County’s varied ethnic character, as derived from our Czech and German immigrants, is reflected in the 20-plus dance halls where several still host public dances on the first and third Saturdays of every month.
October is the setting for the Austin County Fair where youth of all ages gather to celebrate our agricultural background. Other fun events include Bellville Heritage Day in May and Christmas activities on the first Saturday in December. Wallis Guardian Angel Catholic Church is a beautiful historical visitor attraction that is one of the most elaborate of the famous painted Texas churches.
It is my sincere hope you will make Austin County one of your favorite destinations. If I can be of any service, I join with our local chambers of commerce and others to offer our assistance. Please visit our Web site at www.austincounty.com for more information. Have a pleasant stay! County Judge Carolyn Bilski
