Why Stop In Bastrop County???

To the east of Austin is the fast-growing county of Bastrop. New businesses, road construction, and a bustling atmosphere can be seen all around, but the deep history of the county is what we are most proud of.
The city of Bastrop is the county seat. Its mission statement is to make Bastrop the best community in the nation through preservation of the past and progress for the future. This is readily seen with the care of the historical homes and businesses blending with the new upscale subdivisions and businesses. Tourists flock to the antique stores and restaurants in the historical downtown district.
In the northern part of the county is the city of Elgin, the Sausage Capital of Texas. The city is currently working on the Elgin Main Street Program. Its goal is to save the heritage by preserving the historic downtown area. Elgin is proud of their many parks and was the first city in the area to have movies in the park.
Just past the Lost Pines on State Highway 71 is the quiet, beautiful town of Smithville. In the center of the city you can still see the working railroad yards which are a big part of the history of the community. The movie “Hope Floats” was filmed in Smithville.
Bastrop County is home to Bastrop State Park and Buescher State Park where a family can rough it in our beautiful pines. New to the area is the Hyatt Resort which overlooks the serene Colorado River.
