Why Stop In Concho County???

August 30, 2005 by admin

Concho County is the exact center of Texas, the geodetic center, that is. The geodetic center simply means that if the extremities of Texas were converted into a rectangle, then diagonal lines were drawn from the corners, the point at which the lines cross puts the center in Concho County. Several years ago, the surveyors society placed a granite marker in a pasture about 15 miles southwest of Eden.
Concho County’s attractions may well be one of the best-kept secrets of the state. The county seat is located in Paint Rock, which gets its name from the Painted Rocks or Indian pictographs about a mile or so northwest of the courthouse. While the pictographs are located on private property, the owners will readily conduct tours by appointment. This is one of the largest sets of pictographs in North America. While in Paint Rock, you are always welcome to tour the historic 1886 courthouse.
In the northeast corner of the county is Lake O.H. Ivie, which is considered one of the best fishing lakes in the state at the present time. On the other side of the county map in the northwest corner is the Lowake Community with one of the oldest and best steakhouses in the state.
Back down toward the center of the county about five miles east of Eola is the Barrow Museum, which includes a complete early day dentist office, china collections, and thousands of arrowheads, to name just a few items!
Finally, we have the largest count of wild turkeys in the state and some of the best dove hunting anywhere.
