What is “XIT,” and why is everything in town named after it? The XIT Ranch, the largest fenced range in the world, was created to build the
$5 million red granite Texas Capitol building in exchange for 3 million acres. The XIT got its name from its brand, and the headquarters was located in Dallam County. The XIT Rodeo & Reunion has been an annual August event since 1925, entailing a three-day festival of nonstop fun, good food, the world’s largest free barbecue, nightly dances, and a PRCA rodeo.
Visitors are invited to browse the XIT Museum, the James R. Fox Memorial, or La Rita Performing Arts Theatre (www.larita.org), the most beautifully restored theater between Denver and Dallas.
Lake Rita Blanca Park, some 1,800 acres, boasts outdoor activities including 60,000 migratory geese during hunting season. Rita Blanca National Grasslands invites hiking, wildlife watching, hunting, horse riding, and off-road vehicles on its 77,000 acres. More than 200,000 head of cattle and 150,000 hogs are fed within a 15-mile radius of Dalhart.
Hilmar Cheese is building the first phase of a $350 million processing plant, and Dalhart will soon be the center of the dairy industry in Texas as some 100 dairies are scheduled to be built within a 50-mile radius in the next 10 years.
Visiting tourists wonder if the Martians have landed when at night they see hundreds of blinking lights from all the center pivot sprinkler systems.
