Dimmit County was named for one of the framers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Phillip Dimmitt, a Pennsylvania adventurer. Dimmit County is located in the southwestern part of Texas and was created in 1858 from portions of Maverick, Webb, Uvalde, and Bexar counties. The county was formally organized in 1880, and Carrizo Springs was chosen as the county seat.
