“The stars at night are big and bright” in Midland County. Visibility for miles, pump jacks, skyscrapers, and the warmest, friendliest people in the world make up a county located “deep in the heart” of West Texas. It is not so much the geographical scenery, but rather it is the giving, supportive hearts and the visionary minds of the people that make Midland County extra special.
Midland County has only one incorporated area, the city of Midland, with the majority of the 120,000 population living within the city limits. These folks have built or enticed and support an unbelievable number of museums, sports venues, and non-profit organizations to locally take care of their own; excellent institutions of education from kindergarten to the Community College; quality health care; and an international airport.
Our future projects include developing La Entrada Pacifico which is the highway from the Pacific Coast of Mexico going through Midland County to the Panhandle of Texas, joining with our neighboring county, Ector, to form a rail district, and finishing our 127,638-square-foot equestrian event arena and expo center, the “Horseshoe,” by January 2006.
Visitors will have many choices of interest from the Commemorative Air Force Museum with vintage WWII aircraft and memorabilia hosting the well known AirSho every October, or the Petroleum Museum which tells the history of the oil and gas industry and houses the championship Chaparral Race Car Gallery, to the Museum of the Southwest which not only displays great works of art and art shows, but also has housed on its grounds a planetarium, an interactive children’s museum, and the Haley Library, a Southwestern history research facility.
There are several well-preserved historical homes including the first home of President George and First Lady Laura Bush.
The Midland Community Theatre provides hours of diverse entertainment to fans of all ages, has won prestigious awards, and is considered one of the best venues of its kind in the entire country.
Midland County is filled with exciting events, plans and projects, but the very best thing about Midland County is our people.
