Formed in 1846, Polk County nestles in the heart of the Texas Forest Country, bounded by the Trinity and Neches Rivers.
To the north and east lie 100 miles of scenic roads, four Texas Woodland Trails, and the home of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. To the west lies the 93,000 acres of Lake Livingston. Lined with homes, marinas, campgrounds and fishing piers, it supplies water to the lower Trinity River Basin, Greater Houston area, and municipalities within the county.
Livingston, the county seat, is just 70 miles north of downtown Houston. Our close proximity provides easy access to George Bush Intercontinental Airport and to the renowned Houston Medical Center. Polk County’s own Memorial Medical Center recently completed a $30-million expansion, offering a full range of medical services locally.
Polk County is a premier recreation destination. Lake Livingston State Park is open year-round, while the annual Pow-Wow at the Reservation and Trade Days at Pedigo Park on third Monday weekends are huge draws to the area.
Lush forests with abundant deer populations bring hunters from across the state, and Polk County is home to the national headquarters of Escapees, Inc., a 65,000-member organization of RV owners. We are the state’s largest timber producer, with oil and gas being the second-largest contributor to the economy. In 1993, TDCJ located the Polunsky Unit here and, in 2007, expansion of the nearby IAH Secure Adult Detention Facility was completed, both serving as major employers for the area.
With its unique blend of country living and urban accessibility, Polk County has it all, from great barbecue to historic B&Bs. For more on the advantages and opportunities in Polk County, call (1-800-766-LAKE) or visit www.livingston.net/chamber.
