Real County is nestled at the foot of the Texas Hill Country on the Edwards Plateau. The area is a recreational paradise for vacationers, and home to many working ranches. The beautiful Frio and Nueces rivers grace the landscape with tall cypress and sycamore trees and clear sparkling water. The largest bald cypress and live oak trees in the state are in the area. Summer campers and winter hunters enjoy the slower pace of country living.
Leakey, the county seat, has a population of 399 on most days, but swells to thousands when the July 4th July Jubilee rolls around with its rodeos, parades and craft fairs. In another Real County town, Camp Wood, the Old Settlers Reunion boasts the same atmosphere.
Historical museums strive to capture local history, and historical markers are numerous throughout the county.
Real County, though small in area, offers a variety of restaurants, cultural activities, churches and shopping. The people are welcoming, and the hills and rivers are inviting. The county population of 3,040 and the hometown feel make Real County a unique place to live or visit.
