Why Stop In Sutton County???

July 3, 2008 by Sarah L

Sonora and Sutton County provide a window on Texas history with many historical buildings and a “Wild West” flavor. We are located at the intersection of I-10 and US 277 near the very end of the Hill Country, just before the terrain begins to change to a more desert-like setting.
Our newly renovated 1891 Oscar Ruffini Courthouse is a jewel gracing the center of historic downtown. The courthouse boasts custom paint finishes and elaborate wall stenciling that hark to the grandeur of the past.
The downtown area also has the Miers Home Museum, Old Jail, Historical Society, Friends of Historic Sonora Main Street with the Pioneer Women and Veterans from all Wars Museum, numerous historic homes, and the soon-to-be-opened Old Ice House Museum, which will have on display numerous artifacts from the past.
In August of each year, the Sutton County Days Association presents the Outlaw Pro Rodeo. This rodeo features a number of performances with many big names from the professional rodeo world. In conjunction with this, Sutton County Days is held at the county park with vendor and food booths, activities and fun for the whole family. We have several nice restaurants and motels to make your stay not only interesting, but comfortable.
Stop by to meet some of the friendliest and most interesting people in Texas. County Judge Carla Garner
