Why Stop In Terry County

February 2, 2009 by Sarah L

The cotton in your shirt and the peanuts in your last candy bar may have been grown in Terry County, one of the top cotton- and peanut-producing counties in the state.
Stop in to see the first Quilt Trail in Texas, 10 seven-foot-by-seven-foot signs painted with popular quilt squares placed throughout the county! You’ll remember your favorite quilt and the love (and cotton) from which it was made!
There’s a quilt block in Meadow, the hometown of Sonny Curtis. Stop by the Meadow Museum to learn about the composer of many hits, including Bobby Fuller’s “I Fought the Law.”
As you enter Brownfield to view additional quilt squares, stop at Hamilton Park to learn about our rich history and promising future. Head downtown to see the 1938 mural at the Police Department, the historic courthouse, and the Veteran’s War Memorial.
There’s a quilt square in front of the Terry County Heritage Museum. Go inside to see antique quilts, exhibits on Indians, buffalo, cowboys, pioneer homes, and more. While you’re there, ask about Skip-Bo; this popular card game was invented in Brownfield!
Enjoy a meal at one of our many restaurants. Or, order the food to go, and enjoy a picnic at one of our many local parks.
Southwest of Lubbock, our county is on your way to Ruidoso, N.M. Plan to stop for the Annual Quilt Show in April or for the Harvest Festival in October. Anytime is a great time to see the quilt blocks, enjoy our local history, grab a bite to eat, and visit our parks!
