Why Stop In Upton County???

April 4, 2005 by Sarah L

Upton County is in southwestern Texas. Rankin, the county seat, is about 55 miles south of Midland. Upton County covers 1,241 square miles, and has a population of 3,404. The county is made up of McCamey and Rankin and the farming community of Midkiff, known for its championship pecans.
Our area transportation network includes U.S. Highways 385 and 67 and State Highways 329 and 349.
Upton County proudly produces energy above and below the ground. Resources include oil, renewable wind energy, agriculture and hunting.
McCamey was designated Wind Energy Capital of Texas in 2001 by the House and Senate. Upton County is home to two wind farms with approximately 235 wind turbines.
Visit the Livestock Show in January, McCamey’s Market Mania the third weekend of April, and join in the chili cook-off the last weekend in October. Or come see McCamey’s Mendoza Trail Museum or other area sites such as Castle Gap Park, Horse Head Crossing, and Million Barrel Tank Farm.
Our county seat, Rankin, is home of the World Championship Barbado Cook-off every Memorial Day, the Horned Toad Round-up Chili Cook-off in February, and the Junior Livestock All-Kid Rodeo in June.
Lawrence Welk and his band used to entertain at the Yates Museum in Rankin, and singers Dan Seals (England Dan) and Jimmy Seals (Seals and Crofts) grew up in Rankin.
We’d love to have you stop by, visit the friendly residents of Upton County, and experience our beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
County Judge Vikki Bradley
