Williamson County is located in Central Texas, just north of the state capitol in Austin. Physically, the eastern part of the county is level black land soil and the western part rolling limestone hills, all drained by the San Gabriel River and tributaries.
The county was organized in 1848 and named for Robert M. Williamson, pioneer leader and veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. The county has a lively history including Comanches, outlaws, Texas Rangers, the Chisholm Trail, cowboys, and sturdy pioneers.
In Georgetown, visitors can shop around the quaint town square and visit the historic Williamson County Courthouse, where in 1923 District Attorney Dan Moody was the first lawyer to successfully prosecute the Ku Klux Klan. The courthouse has been restored to its original splendor and is open for tours through the Williamson County Historical Museum. Also in Georgetown is Inner Space Cavern, Texas’ most accessible cavern where you can trek through fantastic cave formations.
