The 1891 Edwards County Courthouse has stood the test of time and disaster. In 1897 the county capitol was engulfed in flames with only the stone walls surviving. In 1927 a tornado struck the county seat of Rocksprings, tearing the roof off of the courthouse. The Oscar C. Dancy Courthouse in the county seat of Brownsville was restored and rededicated in 2006. The historic courthouse was fashioned in 1912 in a Renaissance style with Classical Revival elements as designed by Atlee B. Ayres. The county constructed a new courthouse in 1981 and named the historic structure for Oscar Dancy, who served as county judge for 45 years. The Stonewall County Courthouse was erected in 1983 in a Modern style. The original county capitol built in the inaugural county seat of Rayner is now a private residence. Stonewall County was one of 54 counties formed by the 15th Texas Legislature in 1876 from the Young and Bexar districts; the county was named for Gen. T. J. (Stonewall) Jackson. The Coryell County Courthouse was designed by W.C. Dodson in a Beaux-Arts style with Romanesque details. The county capitol, fashioned of limestone and sandstone, was erected in 1897. The stones used to build the courthouse were quarried south of the Leon River and then shaped and numbered by Scottish stonecutters.
