Giddings, the county seat, and the surrounding Lee County area offer the benefits of small-town living while providing easy access to major population centers in the Lone Star State. The area is centrally located on the major transportation routes between Austin and Houston, Bryan/College Station, and San Antonio.
The county’s early settlers were of pioneer stock including Anglo-Saxons, Germans and Wendish. Today’s town of Serbin, a beautiful farming community, was the original “Texas Home of the Wends.” Their full story is told in the Texas Wendish Heritage Society’s Museum Complex.
The history of Lee County is detailed in the Lee County Heritage Center, housed in the refurbished Schubert-Fletcher home in downtown Giddings and the Lee County Museum.
In 1976, two log cabins were moved and restored as the Lexington Bicentennial Celebration. A corn crib was later added to the Pioneer Village Complex – a communitywide effort that included young children and our senior citizens.
The Lee County Courthouse, built in 1897, was designed by J. Riely Gordon in a Romanesque Revival style. The courthouse was the 19th county capitol to be refurbished by the Texas Historical Commission. Tours are offered 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
Our local economy is mostly made up of farming, ranching, and oil and gas production.
Popular attractions include Lake Somerville and Lake Bastrop, within a 20-30 minute drive from Giddings. Our state parks offer beautiful picnic areas, spacious RV sites, and hike and bike trails. County Judge Evan Gonzales
